Recycling eyeglasses and hearing aids are our ongoing services since we started a year (2012) after our club was chartered. Tt is one of our club's main Services for sight and envronmental protection. Glasses don't biodigrade. When thrown on landfills contaminate the soil, water and kill animals that drink contaminated water. With wars, disasters and economical burden around the world the recycled eyeglasses and hearing aids are in great demand, and so the importance of protecting our environment that these glasses won't end up in landfills.
There are 2 billion people globally who don’t have access to much-needed eyeglasses due to income, disaster, or distances to reach any ophtomology office. (WHW). Your unused donated eyeglasses can help many people to experience corrected vision for the first time, enabling them to read, attend school, gain employment and take care of their families
Recycling of unused eyeglases is the Financial District Lions Club's yearr-round Charity Service in support to the eyeglass programs of Lions International around the world. Since we started this project in 2012 we have collected over 15,000 eyeglasses donated by good hearted Newyorkers. These eyeglasses and hearing aids have found new owners in the U.S., and around the world where Lions clubs are actively serving to meet vision needs of those who cannot afford them. Once we get the collected eyeglasses and hearing aids we separate and pack them to delive to the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center in New Jersey, where trained volunteers sort, clean and determine the prescription strengths of the glasses. These eyeglasses are then carefully catalogued and packed by prescription and stored until they are required for eyeglass-dispensing missions to developing nations around the world, where trained Lion volunteers and eye care professionals perform vision screenings and dispense the appropriate recycled glasses, free of charge, to children and adults.
